Yoga and weight training are two quite different disciplines, both in terms of the work of the body and the goal sought with physical activity.

Some people practice one or the other, but it is possible to do both and the combination offers great benefits!

Types of yoga

Many people believe that yoga is simply relaxation exercises, without requiring any particular physical effort. On the other hand, yoga is an activity on its own and there are more than 30 varieties ! The basis always remains a practice without judgment and without competition.

1. Hatha Yoga

This style of yoga is ideal for beginners, as it is gentler and less energetic than many others. Hatha yoga allows you to learn the basic postures and become familiar with the activity.

2. Ashtanga

This one is more dynamic, with quick and energetic sequences of movements which follow a kind of choreography. The Ashtanga is physically demanding; it is therefore ideal for people who are used to it or who are looking for greater intensity. It develops strength, flexibility and energy.

3. Vinyasa

Vinyasa is in the most dynamic styles of yoga. The postures vary, but they are based on the alignment of the body. The sequences have fluid transitions: each movement is synchronized with his breathing. If you practice this style, you mainly work the breath and improve your endurance.

4. Power yoga

Yoga with multiple influences (Hatha, Ashtanga…) which aims to develop strength and flexibility. It is athletic yoga that aims to build muscle while respecting the structure of a classic yoga class that includes breathing, sun salutation and meditation.

5. Hot yoga

The particularity of Hot Yoga is that it is practiced in a room heated to 40 degrees. It allows to eliminate toxins through perspiration and to stretch the muscles in depth. It is also a good activity to reduce the risk of injury.

How to integrate yoga into a strength training routine?

Incorporating yoga into your workout routine does not necessarily mean completing a full yoga session after strength training in order to reap the benefits. Indeed, several possibilities are available to you:

  • Integrate some yoga postures before your weight training, as a warm-up, or after, as a cool-down;
  • Depending on the energy of the day, swap a regular workout for an hour of yoga. You could, for example, replace your weight training session with a Hatha session if your body feels the need for a break;
  • Simply replace a weight training session with a power yoga session for example. Not only will you use cardio and weight training, but you will also work on your flexibility!

If you are new to yoga, it is best to start with a yoga professional. If you prefer to start on your own, the internet is full of videos offering lessons for everyone. Remember, however, that the mentality of letting go, self-acceptance and non-competitiveness prevails in yoga practice. In other words, listen to your body and perform movements that appeal to you.
